Walt Disney WORLD Resort<\/h2>\n

Before diving into facts about specific parks within WDW, let\u2019s start with the bigger picture\u2014the Resort as a whole.<\/p>\n

As I\u2019ve mentioned many times<\/a>, Walt Disney World Resort spans an area of 119 km\u00b2<\/strong>\u2014that\u2019s twice the size of Manhattan<\/strong>. With numbers like that, we could just stop here \ud83d\ude02<\/p>\n

No structure in the Resort is taller than 200 feet (60 m)<\/h3>\n

The reason is simple: due to its proximity to Orlando International Airport, any structure taller than 60 meters must have red nighttime warning lights.<\/p>\n

Given the obsessive attention to detail<\/strong> of the Imagineers, it\u2019s clear we\u2019ll never see blinking lights atop any ride or building within the Resort.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Walt\u2019s Airport<\/h3>\n

Walt Disney World Resort was originally meant to be much more than what we see today.<\/p>\n

As part of the Florida Project<\/strong>, Walt envisioned EPCOT<\/strong> as the central hub<\/strong>, with the theme parks merely serving as entertainment for the thousands of residents in the city of the future he had planned.<\/p>\n

Like any major city, it was to include a large airport to accommodate the many tourists.<\/p>\n

Although plans changed after Walt\u2019s death, the idea of having a landing strip remained.<\/p>\n

For many years, this airstrip\u2014located near the Transportation and Ticket Center\u2014was actually used by small private jets transporting VIPs and Disney executives.<\/p>\n

In recent years, however, it has been abandoned<\/strong> and is now used as a container storage area.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

How many people work there?<\/h3>\n

WDW Resort employs more people than all other Disney parks in the world combined.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are around 70,000\u201380,000<\/strong> cast members working at the Resort, depending on the season.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that the total number of Disney employees worldwide is about 200,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We can safely say that WDW is not only the centerpiece<\/strong> of the global theme park industry<\/strong>, but also where about one-third of Disney\u2019s entire workforce is concentrated.<\/p>\n

Staggering numbers!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

How many glasses are lost per day?<\/h3>\n

While we\u2019re on a roll with jaw-dropping stats, this one is incredible!<\/p>\n

To date, around 200<\/strong> pairs<\/strong> of glasses are lost<\/strong> inside the Resort every day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Some curious soul took it further and found that since the park opened in 1971, over 1.6 million pairs have been lost!<\/p>\n

These numbers give you an idea of just how many visitors pass through the Resort each year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Do people drink more water or Coca-Cola?<\/h3>\n

Even though the answer seems obvious, Coca-Cola,<\/strong> every year across all of WDW, 75 million<\/strong> bottles of Coca-Cola are sold and only 13 million<\/strong> bottles of water. But there\u2019s a catch.<\/p>\n

In Florida, and especially in the United States, water is served free of charge<\/strong> to guests inside restaurants. Not bottled water\u2014we\u2019re talking about tap water.<\/p>\n

At WDW, you can even ask for it for free at quick service restaurants, where they often already have dozens of ready-to-go cups<\/strong> filled with ice, waiting for you\u2014especially in the middle of summer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But another factor that affects this comparison is the minimal<\/strong> price difference between the two. So why choose bottled water when for just a few cents more you can enjoy a soft drink?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Magic Kingdom<\/h2>\n

Magic Kingdom is the most visited theme park in the world, with an average of about 20 to 22 million visitors per year<\/strong>\u2014and that alone is mind-blowing!<\/p>\n

The Cinderella Castle Suite<\/h3>\n

Inside Cinderella\u2019s Castle lies the most prestigious suite<\/strong> in all of WDW.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not clear<\/strong> how one can stay there. Disney often gives<\/strong> access to VIPs or offers it as a grand prize<\/strong> in charity contests.<\/p>\n

What we do know is that it\u2019s located on the fourth floor<\/strong> of the castle, has 24-hour concierge service, accommodates up to 6 people<\/strong>, features a huge bathtub, and each wall hides little magical touches<\/strong> just waiting to be discovered.<\/p>\n

Who wouldn\u2019t want, just once in their life, to stay<\/strong> inside the most photographed castle in the world?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Fake Flags of Magic Kingdom<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s well known that Americans are very patriotic\u2014Stars and Stripes are everywhere, not just on public buildings like in Italy.<\/p>\n

Every morning, in the park\u2019s entrance square, you can witness the flag-raising<\/strong> ceremony, complete with the national anthem.<\/p>\n

Rules on how to handle the national flag are very strict<\/strong>, and Americans follow them to the letter.<\/p>\n

There are so many American flags in Magic Kingdom that caring for all of them would be impossible. So what did they come up with?<\/p>\n

Except for the one used in the morning ceremony, all the others are fake<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

From afar you\u2019d never notice<\/strong>, but some have stars added or removed, or more or fewer stripes.<\/p>\n

This way, the charm of the American flag remains intact without breaking any rules.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Three Castles of Magic Kingdom<\/h3>\n

At Magic Kingdom, it\u2019s not just Cinderella\u2019s Castle\u2014there are two more<\/strong>, maybe less famous and less noticeable, but they\u2019re there.<\/p>\n

The first is Ariel\u2019s Castle<\/strong>, which is obviously located at the entrance to the corresponding attraction, although not everyone really notices it.<\/p>\n

The second is the Beauty and the Beast Castle<\/strong>, located in Fantasyland above the entrance to the Be Our Guest restaurant.<\/p>\n

As you can see, thanks to forced perspective, the castle is actually very small<\/strong>, but sitting atop a fake mountain, it appears to be normal-sized.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Underground City<\/h3>\n

For many years, it was considered an urban legend<\/strong>. Stories circulated about an underground tunnel network connecting every corner of the park.<\/p>\n

Then, at some point, the first leaked photos<\/strong> and the first full map<\/strong> of what Disney calls Utilidors<\/strong> appeared.<\/p>\n

This tunnel network was designed by Walt<\/strong> after the opening of Disneyland, when he realized that cast members often had to cross entire areas of the park to reach the staff cafeteria or wardrobe.<\/p>\n

Walt couldn’t stand<\/strong> the idea of a cast member walking through Frontierland dressed as an astronaut, or vice versa\u2014it didn\u2019t align with his vision of land theming consistency.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So he came up with a tunnel network<\/strong> to connect the major areas of the park\u2014but not only that.<\/p>\n

These spaces also serve as shafts for placing many systems<\/strong> necessary for the operation of stores, restaurants, restrooms, and attractions.<\/p>\n

Inside, there is also a pneumatic transport system for waste disposal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A simple yet genius idea!<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s more.<\/p>\n

Given the swampy nature of the land, the tunnels were NOT excavated<\/strong>, but simply built on the original ground level, and the park was literally constructed on top\u2014like the first floor<\/strong> of a giant building!<\/p>\n

The roughly three-meter elevation<\/strong> was offset by the soil excavated for the creation of the Seven Seas Lagoon<\/strong>, the enormous artificial lake in front of the park.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Color of the Lakes and Streams is Artificial<\/h3>\n

In the most magical place on Earth, everything has to be perfect\u2014including the color of the water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This trick is used in Disney parks around the world for two simple reasons:<\/p>\n

To make these lakes appear much deeper<\/strong> than they really are, so they don\u2019t need to be heavily excavated and can be drained quickly if needed.<\/p>\n

To hide<\/strong> the equipment<\/strong> necessary for shows and attractions at the bottom of these water bodies.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Hidden Tracks of Liberty Square Riverboat<\/h3>\n

This colonial-era steam riverboat<\/strong> is one of the iconic symbols of this area\u2014but it hides a secret<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d say it\u2019s an open secret, since by now it\u2019s well known that the riverboat is indeed powered by real steam engines<\/strong>, but its steering is guided by a track<\/strong> placed at the bottom<\/strong> of the lake.<\/p>\n

Apparently, Valentina didn\u2019t know this \ud83d\ude05<\/p>\n

The lake is drained<\/strong> roughly every two years for track maintenance and cleaning of the lake bed.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Purple Wall in Tomorrowland<\/h3>\n

A few years ago, a spot appeared in Tomorrowland called “The Purple Wall<\/strong>“, located to the right just after entering the land from the central hub of the park.<\/p>\n

If you search for this place on Instagram<\/strong>, you\u2019ll find thousands of photos taken in front of it. It was specifically designed<\/strong> for this purpose\u2014to be photographed and shared on social media.<\/p>\n

Its color was not chosen randomly<\/strong>, and its west-facing position makes it reflect the sunset<\/strong> during golden hour with a WOW effect.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Non-Bathrooms of Liberty Square<\/h3>\n

This land is exclusive<\/strong> to Magic Kingdom.<\/p>\n

It was built to honor Walt\u2019s love for the colonial era<\/strong>, and to stay true<\/strong> to the theme, they decided to go bold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There are NO<\/strong> bathrooms in the entire land.<\/p>\n

If you need to go<\/strong>, you\u2019ll have to hold it until you reach the bathrooms near Rapunzel\u2019s tower in Fantasyland (which are stunning) or head to the ones near Splash Mountain on the opposite side.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not all!<\/p>\n

In the colonial era, not only were there no public restrooms, but there weren\u2019t even private ones<\/strong>. It was common to throw<\/strong> waste out the windows<\/strong> directly onto the streets below.<\/p>\n

That explains the darker-colored path<\/strong> that runs through all of Liberty Square, growing wider as you go\u2014it\u2019s symbolic.<\/p>\n
